What is Cheek Augmentation?

Hollow or sunken cheeks can make you seem a lot older than you actually are, and no one wants to look older than they are. At Exclusively Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Medispa, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Karen performs cheek augmentation to create youthful contour and lift. For your mid-face augmentation, you can receive a nonsurgical cheek lift using dermal fillers or you can get longer-lasting cheek implants. At your initial consult, Dr. Karen can go over the benefits of both options in detail and help you decide which will be the best fit for your needs and goals. Contact our Winchester, VA office to schedule an appointment, and find out how you can lift sagging cheeks for a more youthful appearance.

What Can I Expect from My Cheek Augmentation?

Prior to your cheek augmentation, Dr. Karen will complete a detailed exam to develop a personalized treatment plan that is best for your unique cosmetic goals. In your initial consultation, you will select your treatment method: dermal fillers or cheek implants. Injectable fillers can be a good choice if you want to avoid the expense and time of surgical implants — it might also help you get a clearer idea of the amount of lift and volume you want before switching to cheek implants. Cheek implants are better if you want longer-lasting results and don't mind the recovery.

Injectable dermal filler procedures take about 20 – 30 minutes. At the start of your appointment, the points of injection will be marked along your mid-face and the fillers gently injected and massaged to create an even fullness. You can leave immediately following the procedure and continue your normal activities. Cheek augmentation surgery is performed while you are sedated with general anesthesia. Small incisions are created inside your gums, and a pocket will be made over the cheekbone. Next, the selected implants will be placed and the incisions in your mouth will be closed. Cheek augmentation surgery usually takes about an hour, after which you can leave with a responsible adult to start your recovery at home.

With both options, you may experience bruising, swelling, and tightness. You can expect this to last for under five days for injections and for about 1 – 2 weeks after your surgery. Vigorous activity that may strain your facial muscles (like weight lifting) should be skipped for about 7 – 10 days. Optimal healing typically occurs within 1 – 2 weeks after injections and after about two months with implants.

Cheek Augmentation FAQ

How much does cheek augmentation typically cost?

During your consultation with Dr. Karen, he will listen to your aesthetic goals, examine your face, and help you determine which type of cheek augmentation best fits your goals. Then he can create a cheek augmentation plan and estimate the costs for your procedure. For cheek augmentation procedures, it is always better to concentrate on finding a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Karen rather than focusing on the best price to realize your goals while achieving natural-looking results.

What type of dermal fillers are used for cheek augmentation?

Dr. Karen will choose the appropriate dermal filler for your cheek augmentation goals, but typically, the best results are seen with the JUVÉDERM® product line fillers, especially VOLUMA™. This effective filler is a formulation of hyaluronic acid, which enhances the cheeks to fill in sunken or hollow areas for a fuller, younger look.

How long does it take to have dermal filler cheek augmentation done?

The procedure is quick and often only takes about 20 – 30 minutes.

What if my face is asymmetrical?

Having an asymmetrical face (where one side is different than the other) is more common than people think. During your consultation with Dr. Karen, he will evaluate your facial structure and devise a cheek augmentation plan that can help even out facial asymmetry for a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing look.

How long does cheek augmentation last?

It depends on the type of cheek augmentation you get. Cheek implants done via plastic surgery are permanent. Cheek augmentation done with dermal fillers can last between 6 months to 2 years.
