What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a common aesthetic procedure performed to improve the look of the nose. It is often used to make a nose look smaller or enhance a nose that is aesthetically unappealing due to size, shape, or deformity. In some cases, a man or woman may have already received rhinoplasty but are displeased with the appearance of their new nose shape or are having trouble breathing following nose surgery. For these patients, we offer revision rhinoplasty. The objective for both of these procedures is to produce a more aesthetically appealing nose that meets your goals and functions properly. In addition, it can help improve breathing function in some patients. Winchester, VA double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Karen is an experienced cosmetic facial surgeon who offers rhinoplasty surgery, taking a subtle approach to producing the most natural outcomes. Even though rhinoplasty consists of slight changes, results tend to be quite dramatic. Am I A Candidate For Rhinoplasty?

Adults and teenagers over 16 years of age are candidates for cosmetic nose surgery. If you're displeased with the appearance of your nose and have specific concerns you hope to enhance or repair, this surgery may be the recommended course of action. It's very important that realistic expectations are discussed, as your appearance will be changed. In addition, facial growth should also be complete. This will also be assessed during your consultation, especially for teens.

What Can I Expect from Rhinoplasty?

Before rhinoplasty, Dr. Karen will be happy to meet with you to discuss desires and realistic expectations. Once a treatment plan has been created, your outpatient nose surgery will be performed while you are under sedation. Depending on your specific treatment plan, Dr. Karen will perform your rhinoplasty using either an open or closed technique to get your desired results. During treatment, Dr. Karen will likely remove excess tissue and cartilage or build upon and reconstruct existing cartilage. If necessary, your nasal features will be repositioned and the skin draped over the framework of your nose. To finish, Dr. Karen will suture either the inside portion of your nose or along the natural external crease for minimal to no scarring. Once finished, you will rest comfortably in our private recovery area before being released to heal at home. The area around your nose and below your eyes will be bruised and swollen for a week or so, but ice packs and inflammatory medications can help. Someone from our team will schedule a post-op appointment with Dr. Karen to check your healing process. It generally takes around 2 – 4 weeks to look normal following nose surgery. Within this timeframe, strenuous activity should be avoided.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

How much does rhinoplasty cost?
The cost of rhinoplasty varies based on what technique is used and how complex your procedure is. Before estimating costs, Dr. Karen will listen to your needs and goals to help create your custom treatment plan. When this is complete, he can discuss costs for the facility, anesthesia, and more. For your best results, it's important to focus on selecting an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Karen, instead of the cheapest cost. To help make your surgery easy to afford, Exclusively Faces accepts several payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest medical financing.

Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery?
Although rhinoplasty to improve your appearance is not covered by insurance, if your nose reshaping surgery is considered medically necessary to improve your breathing, some of your costs may be covered by insurance. If you are considering using your insurance, please tell Dr. Karen during your consultation. Our office will help you submit the needed information and paperwork to your insurance to properly process your claim.

Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?
To smooth lumps and bumps on your nose, a wrinkle filler (like JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®) may be an option. An injectable filler can temporarily improve minor imperfections on your nose, which may help you decide if you want to proceed with rhinoplasty. Nose surgery is better for long-lasting results, larger changes, and to adjust the internal structure of the nose for better function. At your consultation, Dr. Karen will let you know if you may be a candidate for nonsurgical nose reshaping.

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty is about improving the nose while still maintaining your cultural identity. This may be a consideration if you are African-American, Asian, or Middle Eastern. During your consultation with Dr. Karen, you can discuss what you like about your nose and what you would like to change. This will allow him to personalize your treatment plan to give you your best results.

Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?
Many patients think about combining nose surgery with another cosmetic procedure, like chin or cheek augmentation. Combining surgeries for a dramatic result can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Karen. Once he understands your concerns and goals, he can help you choose which procedures will be in your treatment plan. Nose reshaping surgery can help make your whole face look more balanced, so you should wait to see your results before considering another procedure.
