What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a common aesthetic procedure performed to improve the look of the nose. It is often used to make a nose look smaller or enhance a nose that is aesthetically unappealing due to size, shape, or deformity. In some cases, a man or woman may have already received rhinoplasty but are displeased with the appearance of their new nose shape or are having trouble breathing following nose surgery. For these patients, we offer revision rhinoplasty. The objective for both of these procedures is to produce a more aesthetically appealing nose that meets your goals and functions properly. In addition, it can help improve breathing function in some patients. Winchester, VA double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Karen is an experienced cosmetic facial surgeon who offers rhinoplasty surgery, taking a subtle approach to producing the most natural outcomes. Even though rhinoplasty consists of slight changes, results tend to be quite dramatic. "I had MOHS surgery on my nose and they had to go so far down to my cartridge that it could not be stitched. I went to Dr. Karen and he did surgery to fix my left side of nose. The results were phenomenal. When he did the forehead flap to my nose I was so worried about how it looked but he assured me that it would look great . I then had second surgery and he was right. I'm so grateful that he was able to fix it and what a wonderful job he did. I would definitely recommend him. "- B.G. / Healthgrades / Jan 10, 2017

What Can I Expect from Rhinoplasty?
Before rhinoplasty, Dr. Karen will be happy to meet with you to discuss desires and realistic expectations. Once a treatment plan has been created, your outpatient nose surgery will be performed while you are under sedation. Depending on your specific treatment plan, Dr. Karen will perform your rhinoplasty using either an open or closed technique to get your desired results. During treatment, Dr. Karen will likely remove excess tissue and cartilage or build upon and reconstruct existing cartilage. If necessary, your nasal features will be repositioned and the skin draped over the framework of your nose. To finish, Dr. Karen will suture either the inside portion of your nose or along the natural external crease for minimal to no scarring. Once finished, you will rest comfortably in our private recovery area before being released to heal at home. The area around your nose and below your eyes will be bruised and swollen for a week or so, but ice packs and inflammatory medications can help. Someone from our team will schedule a post-op appointment with Dr. Karen to check your healing process. It generally takes around 2 – 4 weeks to look normal following nose surgery. Within this timeframe, strenuous activity should be avoided.
