What is a Scar Revision Surgery?
Scars are a very common skin flaw that can be located anywhere on the face and body. For some people, a scar is an unwanted reminder of an old wound or another condition that caused a disruption to the skin’s surface. While some scars aren't a problem, some can be unsightly and unappealing. They may be big, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed and not easily camouflaged into the surrounding skin. Depending on where the scar is located and its condition, scar revision surgery may be needed to improve how it looks. Similarly, mole or lesion removal may also be performed with particular care to decrease the likelihood of scarring. Sharpsburg, GA double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Karen offers scar revision and mole removal surgery at Exclusively Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Medispa to decrease the size of and fix your scar's appearance.

What Can I Expect From My Scar Revision?
To start your scar revision, we will employ a local anesthetic or sedation based on the extent of the case. For bumpy or thick scars, a shave excision can be performed to level and even out the scar. Raised and/or larger scars can be decreased by using an elliptical incision, which removes the scar and part of the tissue and skin around it, then stitching the skin closed. Bigger scars sometimes will need a skin graft or tissue expansion so that the old scar can be excised, permitting healthy skin to be reconnected. If the texture or color of the scar is of main concern, Dr. Karen may suggest laser treatment to lessen the color and visibility of a scar. If you have a recessed scar or one that appears "pitted," Dr. Karen may offer an injectable dermal filler product to produce a more even, natural complexion. Similar to scar revision, mole removal can be performed in a few different ways, depending on the type of mole. Moles that are only skin deep or flush with the skin’s surface may be eligible for laser removal or a simple skin shaving technique. Moles and lesions that are deep-seated may require excision, similar to that of a scar. Following your treatment, incision care is an important component of the recovery process. Dr. Karen or a member of his staff can give detailed instructions on how to care for your wound so that the revised scar is smaller, lighter, and thinner. Keep in mind that the scar will not be fully removed; however, most well-performed scar revision surgeries can create a natural, softer appearance.
Scar Revision FAQ
How much does scar revision surgery cost?
The costs of scar revision surgery depend on the type of scar, size of the treatment area, and location. During your consultation with Dr. Karen will examine your scar and listen to your concerns. He will then be able to create a personalized scar removal surgical plan and estimate your costs. Exclusively Faces accepts many types of payments, and we can help you get low-interest medical financing.
Does scar revision surgery completely eliminate the original scar?
Although scar revision surgery can dramatically reduce the appearance of a scar, typically, a small part of it will remain. Post-procedure care instructions are crucial to achieving optimal outcomes with scar revision surgery. You need to follow all instructions with medication and care to promote better healing and results.
Are there nonsurgical options to reduce scars?
Some types of scars, like a depressed scar, can benefit from and be reduced with dermal fillers. Injected into the skin, dermal fillers help even and smooth the scar area to balance its appearance to the surrounding healthy skin.
Can scar revision be combined with other aesthetic procedures?
Yes, it can. Often, procedures like laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, dermal fillers, and more are used to help treat scars and revitalize the skin's appearance. During your consultation with Dr. Karen, he can go over the various scar treatment options and help you create a scar revision treatment plan that's right for you.
Does scar revision surgery hurt?
No, scar revision surgery isn't uncomfortable for the majority of patients. Dr. Karen will use an anesthetic to numb the treatment area before he begins to ensure you are comfortable during the entire procedure.
