What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing at Exclusively Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Medispa is a noninvasive cosmetic procedure designed to exfoliate damaged skin cells layer by layer. The treatment is great for reducing facial wrinkles and lines and diminishing skin irregularities, including acne scars, pigmentation, and other flaws. Sometimes known as a laser peel, fractional skin resurfacing is a great facial treatment for Shenandoah Valley men and women who want softer, clearer, and younger-looking skin. Depending on the condition of the skin type, the laser can be customized accordingly. There is some recovery time required for most laser skin resurfacing facials; however, it is minimal. If you have any concerns or questions, contact Sharpsburg, GA double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Karen to schedule a consultation.

Our Laser Skin Resurfacing Technique

Before your skin resurfacing treatment, Dr. Karen will create a treatment plan based on the condition of your skin and your cosmetic goals. If you require a deeper treatment, you may be given a retinoid cream to use for 2 – 3 weeks before your procedure for better results. At the start of your session, we will give you either local anesthesia or some kind of sedation, depending on the level of treatment, to keep you comfortable. As you relax in a treatment chair, we will pass the laser over your skin, targeting the treatment areas. You will feel heat followed by cold air from the system's built-in cooling device. The laser is designed to eliminate damaged and dead skin cells while promoting collagen production. Following lighter resurfacing sessions, a healing ointment will be smoothed over your skin before you leave. You may have some redness, irritation, and swelling, but this will diminish in a few days, and the peeling process will last over the next 3 – 5 days or so. For a deeper resurfacing procedure, your recovery period will take longer, the treatment areas will likely be protected with dressings, and your side effects may be intensified with a recovery time lasting 2 – 3 weeks. No matter what level of treatment, you should limit UV exposure and apply sun protection regularly. Your skin will naturally crust, flake, and peel away as it begins to heal itself. It's crucial to avoid picking at your skin to prevent scarring. Once healed, your skin should be smoother, clearer, and appear younger-looking.

Ablative vs. Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing

There are two types of laser skin resurfacing: ablative and non-ablative. Non-ablative skin resurfacing is a gentler technique that does not eliminate any layers of skin. Rather, it simply sends thermal energy into deeper levels of the skin, stimulating the body's natural production of collagen and elastin. As such, it usually has a very minimal recovery period. Ablative skin resurfacing, on the other hand, is actually physically removing the outer layers of the skin. Though this can lead to longer periods of downtime, it is also able to achieve results that are not possible through non-ablative means.
